"Is It Because I'm Jack?" to tour in 2011
"Is It Because I'm Jack?", my dark comedy about life and friendship featuring Clyde Berning, Morne Visser, Andrew Laubscher and Anele Matoti, which premiered at the Aardklop Arts Festival and then had a brief run at On Broadway in Cape Town, is undergoing some rewriting before touring later in 2011.
Is It Because I'm Jack? explores what happens when four young friends in the prime of their lives are forced to confront their mortality after one of them - a stand up comic - is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Is it all just a bad joke?
Jack has a stellar cast of young actors with established theatrical and television backgrounds. In the title role is Clyde Berning, best known for his leading role on MNet's Known Gods and recently seen on Cape Town stage in the Maynardville production of Antony and Cleopatra. Anele Matoti plays the terminally funny character of Farai. Anele comes to Jack with years of television experience under his belt - eTV's Shooting Stars and MNET's League of Glory amongst them. Morne Visser, recently seen as Dr Sparks in Nu Metro's SKIN, plays the businessman Marty, while Andrew Laubscher is Tim - a recently ordained Catholic Priest. Laubscher has a theatrical following from his leads in Maynardville productions and can currently be seen in the Mechanicals' Lunatic Fringe repertory season. The cast are all directed by the multi-talented arts producer, director, educator, writer and actor, Yvette Hardie.
